What Dollar General employees say about their job

  • Best thing

The current workforce store manager and a few employees are what make our team great and are like a family

    Worst thing

We hire "great" candidates and end up being treated horribly by the new employees, being interrupted during our breaks and having to be alone in the store and not having hours to hire more people

    3.6

Key holder at Dollar General, April 2026

  • Best thing

My community that I have faithfully served
    I love my customers!

    Worst thing

When fail the same things over and over again and it’s not because we don’t do our jobs it because there is too much put on us to do!

  • Best thing

    The costumes

    Worst thing

The higher ups not understanding that each store is different and we need more hrs for more help to cover shifts so Noone is left to do things by theirsèlf. We are over worked under payed and under appreciated

    2.8

Assistant store manager at Dollar General, April 2026

  • Best thing

Store managers are given flexibility on schedule ( still have to schedule to meet a score criteria)

Dollar General also has a good selection of a variety of products at very reasonable prices combined with their DG Coupon program.

    Worst thing

Low payroll budget combined with a suggested schedule that leaves unsafe gaps in coverage on shifts. Schedule score/budget is centered around completing the truck within the first 2 days of its arrival, consequently leaving leads/managers by themselves for several hours during the remainder of the week (making it hard to use bathroom, assist customers away from register, check in vendors and also complete other workday tasks farther away from register)

Also the amount of seasonal that floods through on the trucks weekly, especially toys, with no clear action plan for housing all the merchandise when it comes time to shift/changeover sets and does not markdown timely to help sell through, with toys rarely marking down

    4.5

Employee at Dollar General, March 2026

  • Best thing

You may not get 40, but you will get hours if you work.

    Worst thing

Employee's are improperly trained or not trained at all. They are asked to go above and beyond and then when everything is going well suddenly you aren't doing enough.

    2.7

Assistant store manager at Dollar General, March 2026

  • Best thing

Friendly staff and manager. Mostly friendly customers.

    Worst thing

Fresh truck, even if I dont work that day they still expect people to come and help with it which can be stressful. When coupons don't work and customers look for the smallest things to nitpick. Moving heavy items and being on feet too much.

    5.1

Lead sales associate at Dollar General, March 2026

  • Best thing

I get to work with some really great people. Most customers are polite and understanding if lines get backed up or we are out of items.

    Worst thing

Pay is lower than other companies. You work by yourself on most days. Some customers are rude no matter what you try to do for them.

    4.9

Assistant store manager at Dollar General, February 2026

  • Best thing

    It’s fast pace.
    There’s always something to do.
Some of my customers are great.

    Worst thing

    Rude customers.
Seasonal could be better. You get a whole section of things that only get brought on sale, some things don’t sell at all. Then you have to make room for something total different to go in a section that is still full.

    4.9

Assistant manager at Dollar General, February 2026

  • Best thing

Job is not bad. Just gotta stock and run cashier.

    Worst thing

Getting underpaid having to stock and Run cash register. Customers have to come first, but if I’m in the middle of stocking and on a ladder, I gotta drop what I’m doing to go help them . Night Shift you got a sweep the floor sweep the parking lot take the trash out to the dumpster and clean out all the bathrooms plus wipe them down all down . Then sometimes they say you don’t do nothing or you don’t do enough, but when or if our store manager gets a bonus, we don’t get none of that and we are supposed to be a team. Lead position is only a dollar more, which is not even worth the damn stress.

    3.3

Sale associate at Dollar General, January 2026

  • Best thing

Flexible schedule. Friendly coworkers and customers. Never run out of work to do if you like to keep busy throughout your shift. There is opportunity to move up in the company.

    Worst thing

Little to no communication from upper management when there are problems with the running of the store that need to be addressed. Lack of positive feedback from managers. Low employee morale due to this. The inside and outside of the store is cluttered and dirty. Supplies needed are not provided. Example… gloves to clean bathrooms. Snow shovel, ice scraper, ice melt for customers to safely get back and forth from vehicles. No snow removal service. Management and corporate seem to care more about employees clocking out within 30 minutes of store closing then cleanliness or empty shelves. The
