What do social workers do?
Social workers have the job of supporting vulnerable people and helping them stay safe from harm. They can work with children and adults.
You may work in a lot of different places - in an office, a hospital, a school or a care home. You might also visit people’s homes.
There are two types of social workers. These are:
- Statutory. These are social workers that work on cases where the law is involved.
- Non-statutory. These are social workers that work on cases that don’t involve the law.
This type of job may involve:
- Investigating new cases
- Developing support plans
- Writing up reports and assessments
- Offering and referring support services, like counselling
- Reviewing cases
- Giving evidence in court
- Helping vulnerable adults live independently
You might need to work in the evening, on weekends and bank holidays.
If you want to apply for a social worker job, you might need the following:
- A university degree or a relevant apprenticeship
- Previous social work experience, such as a working as a social work assistant
- Register with Social Work England
- Pass background checks
- The right to work in the UK
You might also need a driving licence.
