What Subway employees say about their job

  • Best thing

I enjoy the personal connection with the customers and every task is very straight forward and easy to understand

    Worst thing

I do not get paid for how long it takes to close. I am untrained and am frequently left running the shop by myself. I often injure myself on shift with burns on the oven

    3.0

Sandwich artist at Subway, December 2024

  • Best thing

I love the people that I work with, I get along with everyone there and we have a laugh together but we also get the work done so it tends to run smoothly. The hours are sometimes great for if you’re a student and need that extra bit of money coming in. I left my previous job for reasons of my own and I can say that I am physically and mentally happier in my place of work now.

    Worst thing

The hours aren’t good enough for everyone trying to have money to live on. After rent there’s times where I have £6 to last me two weeks until my next payslip. There’s been times where I’ve been assaulted by customers and there’s nothing that has been done from the manager or higher up. I’ve spoken to the police but I’m still waiting on a response from them. There’s times when I feel like I’ve ran the shift all by myself or I’ve had to take changes because my colleagues (who are getting paid more than me) are sat on their phone or are doing god knows what when I’ve asked for help multiple times.

    4.9

Sandwich artist at Subway, November 2023

  • Best thing

    Not a very difficult job.
leeway when needed & food is provided.
    it’s a safe working environment.
We rarely get rude customers or complaints.

    Worst thing

The long hours and the unpaid 30 minute breaks.
9/10 times you can’t take a break because of how busy it can get.
As a manager you feel like you’re carrying the whole store.
Don’t get paid enough for the amount of work load that’s given to a store manager.

    5.0

Store manager at Subway, September 2022

  • Best thing

Easy to take holidays ect, close staff, free sandwich during shift, varied in a way- weather you're doing morning, mid shift or closing there are different tasks for you to focus on.

    Worst thing

Understaffed, minimum wage, not many opportunities, at home (unpaid) training, not enough hours, short shifts, 'voluntary overtime' e.g. unpaid 30 mins-1 hour at close for cleaning. A job for students really.

    4.5

Sandwich artist at Subway, July 2022

  • Best thing

It is very flexible with hours as I am a student.

    Worst thing

No contract. Not told what we are entitled to unless we ask. They prefer not to pay staff holiday pay but will if you ask firmly. Stingy with money and sly.

    2.8

Sandwich artist at Subway, June 2022

  • Best thing

Not much, the food is okay but we still need to pay £1 per meal. The other coworkers are really nice but everyone is trying to find other jobs so

    Worst thing

The rota keeps changing and doesn´t get posted so you will find yourself going in and they'll tell you to leave. The manager is rude and mean, truly would not recommend working there to anyone

    3.4

Sandwich artist at Subway, June 2022

  • Best thing

some team members, food, discount, not entirely difficult

    Worst thing

have to always be quick and adapt to high-intensity environments, not that great pay and most of the time don't get paid overtime, delivery drivers are weird, some team members are not that great, breaks are never that long even if ur on a long shift, if you don't stand up for yourself people will take advantage of you.
