  • Best thing

    The people

    Worst thing

The stress and rude customers and having to clean human fesses of the floor and having rude team members

    6.0

    Costa Coffee Barista, October 2024

  • Best thing

Some of my colleagues are lovely to work with and if given the hours you ask for it pays the bills.

    Worst thing

Working with people is hard, some customers are lovely but ever so often we literally have to call the police because of how bad it can get. There are a lot of restrictions when it comes to how you present yourself. Do not expect to have lovely styled hair or painted nails, or hair clips, even earrings are restricted to just 1 per ear and only hoop style. If you don't get the requested hours in you may struggle to pay bills and rent if you're a student living on your own without any financial support. You will be bothered by management out of hours or told off for the most minor of inconveniences if you work with some rather odd teams.

    Costa Coffee Barista, May 2024

  • Best thing

The people I work with, the discount is also good as it allows me to go there off shift and buy nice things I would otherwise avoid because they are too expensive and in my opinion not worth it.

    Worst thing

The customers are often the most foul people you can come across and will sometimes even report you for doing your job right, just because they don't like it when you tell them no. People expect fast food service but we are not fast food. I am working basically a full time job even though it is only supposed to be part time and I rarely get days off. Hours have been cut meaning that we have to work a lot harder and customer service suffers because we are constantly in a rush when we shouldn't have to be.

    6.4

    Costa Coffee Employee, July 2023

  • Best thing

Good flexibility depending on the manager you have.

Free coffee at work and 50% discount in pretty much every store.

    Worst thing

Getting cover when sick is difficult

Sometimes the working hours include early mornings or late evenings which you can end up working both, for example a 7-9pm close for a 5:30am start which takes a toll.

There can sometimes be that corporate feel between you as the employee and the rest of the company where it’s all about the money and nothing else is taken into consideration. For example so many hours at the minute have been cut and pretty much all stores are working bare bones right now and it just causes so much stress that shouldn’t be there.

    4.6

    Costa Coffee Employee, April 2023

  • Best thing

The team. Everybody has a laugh, but that’s what makes the job. If you don’t get on with them then you will not enjoy this job at all. However, it’s really good for students because you can do any shifts really, it’s good pay at a young age and there are closing shifts for after college/Uni.

    Worst thing

The customers. People in hospitality will know how the general public can be, but in a drive thru with an inside store at the same time… wow. Customers are a nighmare and the managers are good if you get along with them. But when they see you rushed off your feet but asking you to keep up with “targets” and cleaning it is stressful.

    4.7

    Costa Coffee Employee, July 2022

  • Best thing

The team if you have a good relationship
    Discounts in other stores
    Store opening times

    Worst thing

Short times to close the shop especially on busy days

The business higher up have no idea what goes on in stores and make decisions that massively impact the stores without much thought, for example hour cuts leading to stores being under staffed

Constant need for shifts to be covered because of people calling in sick or managers giving people extra shifts that they don't want and expecting employees to do these shifts and then if they refuse or simply can not do them other employees are guilt tripped into covering these shifts often on a very short notice (in the managers defence this could be solved by employing more staff but this is very difficult with the business higher up moving the goal posts when It comes to how many hours the store can give)
