What Halfords employees say about their job

  • Best thing

Building bikes for a living and doing repairs is fun. Staff discount is pretty decent (especially a bike on trade price), and 50% off at autocentres. And I work with some really lovely people.

    Worst thing

Sales targets with no commission and a high expectation to fulfill demand for email receipt captures, incentives, and motoring club sign ups with only a tiny chance of receiving a small team bonus relative to the work put in (you have to be the best store in your area/the uk to receive a reward). Waiting over half a year for uniform and receiving complaints from senior staff when you don't have steel toe caps on (they're apparently on order), or wearing a cardigan in the winter because it's too cold and you've not been given a jumper. Working in a department without the necessary qualifications required to sign work off for the past 6 months, and no update on if you are going to be given a chance to persue said qualifications after asking. Being told that you take too long to do a job when you don't have the ability to sign it off yourself and have to wait for another colleague to do so. Constant short staff problems as the company is reluctant to give stores the hours needed so they can save profits. No update on the potential for a permanent contract after 8 months and just generally having one dangled over your head.

  • Best thing

Have a laugh with colleagues, and managers do take time to talk to you have a laugh and all very friendly

    Worst thing

It gets very stressful, shift patterns are irregular and unplanned usually new rota is put up on the very last minute (Day when rota ends), they can forget to add overtime shifts sometimes so it's usually 2 months before I get paid for overtime I did, im constantly exhausted and holiday is denied without reason

    3.4

    Halfords Sales advisor, May 2024

  • Best thing

Good discount, above average break length

    Worst thing

Random/irregular shifts, never told why holiday is denied, canget very stressful when understaffed and with difficult customers

    4.1

    Halfords Sales advisor, May 2024

  • Best thing

I get to work with cars

    Worst thing

    Very little overtime hours given

    4.3

    Halfords Sales assistant, April 2024

  • Best thing

Working on cars which I enjoy

    Worst thing

Sometimes too much work booked in meaning a stressful day

    6.4

    Halfords Vehicle technician, April 2024

  • Best thing

    Working with a good team

    Worst thing

Very understaffed quite often 80% of the time can be 3 people running a busy shop on most days which can be very stressful trying to provide a quality service to customers especially if there’s a high volume of people. The pay is poor for the workload especially if you’re under 21 as Halfords is heavy on age related pay.

    4.6

    Halfords Auto technician, October 2023

  • Best thing

Everyday is different, work with the things we enjoy. Good staff benefits, teams hold together because of the people

    Worst thing

Pay is low, especially for southern counties. Work load is very high. Staff skill sets are at the lowest they have ever been, staff levels are very low, high turnover of staff

    3.7

    Halfords Deputy manager, September 2023

  • Best thing

Some of the people are great people, and the work can be fulfilling if you know what you are doing and do it well.

    Worst thing

There are many people who don't really know what they are doing and it really affects everyone. The company has a terrible reputation on social media and I'm often embarrassed to say where I work. We are pushed into capturing customer personal information in order to send targeted emails, and can be reprimanded if we don't hit a certain target.

    4.6

    Halfords Sales assistant, March 2022

  • Best thing

The store level team. The job tasks can be enjoyable if you like that sort of thing.

    Worst thing

Running of the company. Not a people company. Big wigs of the company screwing over the little guy. Company makes loads of money so they cut hours and change people's contracts and make them work holidays such as new years day in Scotland. Open longer hours stretching the already stretched staff.
