About The Body Shop

The Body Shop is a cosmetics, skin care and perfume retailer.

Job description from The Body Shop

The Body Shop

When Anita Roddick founded The Body Shop in 1976, she had a vision. Business as a force for good – that’s us. Over 40 years later, we’re proud to be pioneering cruelty-free beauty every step of the way. We’re the original ethical beauty brand. We’ve got a thing for empowering people and enriching our planet. We’re all about keeping it real, in every way possible. Our activist roots remain a huge part of everything we do, from our iconic window posters to our vegetarian products to our infamous campaigns. We’re never afraid to stand up and speak the truth. We like to do things a little differently around here.

The Body Shop is committed to generating positive economic, social and environmental impact. We’re fighting for what we believe in now more than ever. No holding back. Breaking the mould has always come naturally to us, and we need someone who’s not afraid to mix things up.

Your role in a nutshell

To support the store management team in driving sales and profit within the store through the delivery of exceptional customer service on the shop floor at all times. To demonstrate and uphold the values and vision of the company whilst ensuring adherence to company procedures & policies.

More about the role

With over 2,000 exciting products designed to suit every customer's preference, there's a lot to choose from, so our team are on-hand to talk with customers every day. We take the time to learn our customer’s needs and recommend fantastic products that make them feel so good. We offer products that are packed with natural ingredients, many of which have been sourced ethically using Community Trade programmes - so when we advise a customer on their skincare regime, we're not just selling them an ideal, we're actually helping communities build a better life too.

As part of our dedicated team of Consultants you will offer expert advice to our customers and provide an inspirational insight into The Body Shop products and philosophy. You will get to learn the products, their origins and proactively engage with customers to experience a range that suits their preferences and lifestyle.

What we look for

  • Strong interpersonal skills to build rapport with customers - customer service experience is ideal
  • Ability to communicate and listen effectively
  • A genuine passion for beauty and the retail industry
  • Open availability for evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

  • Best thing

if you like the products and are passionate about the company as a whole, it’s a great job. my fellow customer consultants who are around my age are great and make coming into work a fun thing

    Worst thing

some of the people i work with are extremely rude and hypocritical, which makes the environment kinda toxic overall which is part of the reason im leaving soon. as i am younger, my older coworkers (who are working the same role as me for the same pay) feel like they can boss me around and tell me to do things, which feels like im being taken advantage of at work so they can get me to do all the stuff they don’t want to do.

there is so much pressure to get good KPI numbers, which sometimes feels impossible especially since the ones the company cares about the most are ATV and membership conversion percentage. you simply cannot force customers to buy more product, or sign up for a membership (where you have to take personal details such as name, email, DOB, and now there’s added pressure to sign people up for postal vouchers so addresses), as they can simply just not want to buy more product or do not feel comfortable giving someone, especially a young person (which is the majority of my team), personal details to sign them up. there is talk about being put on personal improvement plans if our personal KPI numbers don’t improve as we are ‘letting the team down’ when it is literally something we cannot control most of the time

also the customers that walk through the door treat you with little to no respect, which in addition to the current workplace environment makes you feel pretty rubbish.

The Body Shop Assistant manager, April 2023

  • Best thing

The brand attracts very creative people. So your team is bounds to be diverse, with interesting perspectives. The brand has made a conscious effort to make this a thing even at store level. So all views are given a space, you work collaboratively across your peers and up and down workflow lines.

    Worst thing

At the end of the day, it’s retail. Often wellbeing is sacrificed as the business out pressure on achieving ridiculous and rigid targets that are seldom revised. But they will go on about the importance of protecting your well-being- mostly to cover their HR backs. As much as the store teams are creative, the brand can, and often does, block creative freedom in actioning how the store looks
