What WHSmith employees say about their job

  • Best thing

The best thing is the people I work with. We all respect and work together despite the hard ships. Also, our regular customers who always put a smile on my face.

    Worst thing

The pay. Being paid almost half the wages of those around me is tough, especially when I do more work then them because I cannot let our store go to dumps. The cleaning, even though our store is quite big and has a post office, we are tasked with cleaning ourselves, we had maggots in the kitchen last week. Our cleanliness upstairs in our staff areas is poor. The amount of workers we have as well is appalling, there are 7 of us, including a manager, 1 cluster manager who we see maybe once a week if we’re lucky. In the 7 we have 2 keyholders, 1 being a new colleague. We have a relatively large stock room but not enough stock to fill it because we simply do not sell much. Overall, it is poor to work in and not enough pay.

    WHSmith Sales assistant, September 2024

  • Best thing

    My fellow colleagues
The customers who come in regularly

    Worst thing

    Management don't train you properly
Management can disappear for hours with no way of getting in touch with them
    Not much organisation
The large amount of shoplifting daily with security not on everyday
Higher ups staying ignorant to what the people who work in the stores have to face and deal with daily

  • Best thing

My team and manger are supportive and caring.

    Worst thing

Head office do not understand the impact their actions have in store. There is severe cost-cutting across the business which leads to difficulty in obtaining essential equipment and requisites.

    WHSmith Team leader, June 2024

  • Best thing

    The chaos, you’re never bored.

    Worst thing

The chaos, I tend to work alone a lot and it’s a very busy environment so it makes it difficult to maintain all the tasks you need to do.

    3.2

    WHSmith Employee, May 2024

  • Best thing

I work in an airport, it is a fun and lively environment

    Worst thing

The hours I work, the amount of manual labour involved, the low hourly rate, the fact that I work harder but this is not reflected in my salary. The fact that it is extremely disorganised which has created an unprofessional vibe in the workplace. The fact that we are always understaffed

    3.5

    WHSmith Sales assistant, March 2023

  • Best thing

The people I work with and some members of management are really nice people to work with. Management make an effort to help with out of work issues and cover shifts at last minute.

    Worst thing

We get sent too much stock and don’t have enough space to put it and end up with messy stock rooms which we have to constantly tidy but don’t have time because we have to maintain shop floor ,put out delivery’s and help customers . Head office make plans for position of stock but don’t consider how efficient it is or how it looks on the shop floor . I feel I am underpaid for how hard I work ,minimum wage makes me and other staff feel we are not valued and are worth only the bare minimum of payment .we feel under appreciated by the company.

    6.0

    WHSmith Sales assistant, October 2022

  • Best thing

the people i work with, the proximity of my job to my work

    Worst thing

management is unorganised, the work is draining and the conditions are less the ideal, loads of people keep leaving as soon as they start because of how bad it is

    4.8

    WHSmith Sales assistant, August 2022

  • Best thing

Being able to help people, making friends

    Worst thing

Rude customers, expected to do everything, higher management boss people around and make you feel like you don't do things right, shouted at for forgetting to scan bounce backs

    4.7

    WHSmith Sales assistant, November 2021

  • Best thing

My colleagues are great, especially fellow students

    Worst thing

Head office prioritises certain issues that take a lot of time to amend, and don’t seem to take into consideration how understaffed we are. Students like myself are heavily relied upon to take on extra shifts due to understaffing during the week, and I feel guilty as I have to put my studies first and can’t always take on extra hours during term time.
