What employees are saying about TransPennine Express
-
Best thing
Working with people
Worst thing
Not being paid the same enhancements as other staff
Revenue protection officer at TransPennine Express, February 2026

Best thing
The “view from the office window” includes some of the best scenery in the north of England & Scotland. Comfortable environment, well looked after while at work. Wage.
Worst thing
Early starts & late finishes including weekends and bank holidays. Need concentration at all times while driving. Loads of assessments and tests to just get the job, then complete the training with even more tests and assessments.

Best thing
Variety in shifts and services worked.
Not stuck in an office or at a desk.
Working alongside amazing onboard, station, and cleaning colleagues who offer assistance and friendliness whenever needed.
Great communication and support from local/depot management.
Opportunities to problem solve and help people in difficult situations.
Rarely bored or left with nothing to do.
Great benefits/perks with First Group.
Small company compared to a lot of TOCs with a more compact network so feels a bit more tight-knit and friendly.Worst thing
If shift work isn't for you then you will struggle with the job.
Out of touch head office/upper company management who have no appreciation for the difficulties of frontline roles.
All other non-management, frontline grades are consistently and obviously shown to be second best compared to train driver grade.
Company actively dislikes internal "promotions" for frontline colleagues.
Operational communication and planning/resilience could be greatly improved.Conductor at TransPennine Express, April 2021
