The team I work with. And the discount.
Worst thing
Don’t really get to choose your hours. Usually only give you 4 hour shifts because over 4 hours they have to pay for breaks otherwise. I could be doing the same hours in 2 days instead of them being spread over 4 but they refuse to give me 8 hour shifts as standard and only will if you take up extra hours on top of. Mangers aren’t always the most understanding. Always understaffed. Generally only hire students because they can pay us less. We have to sell certain things on the tills and it’s pressured onto us and is monitored which is very stressful. Extremely difficult to transfer stores as a student because they don’t want to loose you because they’re so understaffed.

So much pressure from management to get a strike rate under 5 which is sometimes impossible when no one wants to buy ‘star buys’.
Management treating everyone differently which is unfair.

Best thing
My store manager and team
Worst thing
Higher up managing. Unrealistic expectations with understaffed stores. Toxic mentality with stores almost harrassed into meeting targets. Higher up management refusing to solve issues brought up by stores. Lack of positive reinforcement, a visit is always somewhat negative no matter what you do.

Best thing
My coworkers.
Worst thing
The disconnect between those of us in our role vs. the people higher up, even just managers within our store.
Firstly, when we pick online orders, the names and locations of items on our scanners rarely ever match up to their actual names or locations. In bigger stores this is a huge learning curb for new people, and even people who have been there for a while struggle as with each update the names and locations get more unhelpful. Nothing is being done about this.
We're encouraged to pick the most orders out of any store in our region with no incentive to do so other than a pizza from the boss, and getting berated when we don't perform. We aren't allowed to sit down at all other than our breaks, not even when sorting out orders. It's not unusual for us to do 10,000+ steps a day, squatting down and climbing rackings and ladders, pushing very heavy dollies full of products and tote bags full of orders around. Back pain and knee pain is rife. Everyone has a caffeine addiction, a lot of people take heavy duty pain killers to deal with the pain.
We're also timed individually. 18 hours an order is the minimum we're meant to pick, while also simultaneously helping customers who don't know we're on a timer.
Orders are then stored in the back, in the same baskets customers use on the shop floor before they're packed, stacked on top of one another in a cluster. They crowd the already too small and claustrophobic space at the back. There's no space to dispatch half the time. Tensions rise because of this, mostly managers snapping at pickers.
Picking orders is prioritised over packing items in time, so by the end of the day we're rushing to get everything finished on time, and I mean RUSHING. Sometimes there's a lot left over and a single team leader is left to pack everything then dispatch it, alone, after everyone else leaves. Or people can volunteer to stay a bit later to help, unpaid. This is due to mismanagement.
