Do Sainsbury’s pay sick pay?

Sometimes. Only some people get proper sick pay at Sainsbury’s.

Supermarkets who pay sick pay include Waitrose & Partners, Marks & Spencer and Booths.

How we know this

Based on data from 161 people who took the Breakroom Quiz between December 2023 and March 2024.

39% of people say they wouldn’t get paid if they were sick but scheduled to work.

Why this matters

Everyone gets sick sometimes. You should be able to take time off without worrying.

At a good job you should still get paid if you’re scheduled to work but can’t due to sickness. Your contract should say how many sick days you can take each year.

This is more than the legal minimum, which says you should only get paid if you are unwell for 4 full days. See Citizens Advice for more details.

What people are saying about sick pay at Sainsbury’s

  • Best thing

If we all realise we are better if we look out for each other, it's great.

    Worst thing

It's now just a job with a feeling of being afraid to be sick. Sad.

  • Best thing

The team i work with I get on with for the most part

    Worst thing

They keep cutting hours sending people to other stores when we don't have enough sometimes to fully run our store and if anybody is on holiday or sick they don't try to find cover for the shift

    Sainsbury’s Customer assistant, January 2024

  • Best thing

    Staff discount.

    Worst thing

No sick pay even for serious conditions until you have worked for the company for 2 years.

Everyone is getting taken to disciplinary meetings all the time for being ill, having bereavements etc.

    3.9

    Sainsbury’s Retail assistant, August 2023

  • Best thing

Can pick up extra shifts when available

    Sainsbury’s Store colleague, May 2023

  • Best thing

    The people I work with

    Worst thing

The early hours. The unsafe conditions. Staff bullying other staff. In this company its not what you know its who you know. Quite often we don't get paid for sick days. Management let certain people get away with murder. Would love undercover boss to come to my store but I don't think they'd be brave enough!
