Best thing
The job is a basic routine each and every night, baring anything extra asked to be done during that night which means you can end up with a lot of downtime if you are able to get things done quickly.
Worst thing
Managers will openly belittle and berate guests and staff alike, there is no attempt by area managment to repair the dilapidated hotel to the point it had a giant leaking hole in the resturant ceiling for half a year.
The hotel manager would not listen to a word or take any interest in nights staff despite repeat burnout on older staff who were expected to supervise and train with no formal guidance, and to also perform every duty newer staff would not bother to do.
Staff assaults were never looked into by managment while a revolving door duty managers were allowed to indulge in racism, homophobia and sexual harassment of staff and guests.
Managment would refuse to arrange cover for absent staff leading to occasions where nights staff were forced to remain in the hotel four hours after the end of the night shift due to the lack of manager to assume responsibility for sensitive buisness materials.
On these occasions nights staff with no kitchen training were also expected to cook and continue serving breakfast well into the day .

Managers and Head Office are constantly changing things which makes the job harder
A lot of the training and policies are based on small hotels or well staffed, fully functioning hotels and if you're not in one of these hotels your job is made incredibly difficult
Hotel managers make decisions about the housekeeping team without considering the head housekeepers input and compromising
You will get an injury working at this job. Many of my coworkers have developed bad backs, long term muscle strains and other long lasting injuries. This is due to being an understaffed hotel with 4 floors and no elevator so heavy loads are carried up the stairs constantly
Employees are rarely given My Rewards points, the only ways to get them are to be the best housekeeper in a season (Summer/Spring/Autumn/Winter) or to complain about being treated badly so much you get points.
While the payment of this job appears to be legal, the money isn't worth the labour, the injury's you will get, and the guests you will deal with. It is also a slap in the face to see coworkers working 1 or 2 other jobs, still barley paying their rent/mortgage and then hear that the company has made record profits that year.
If your hotel isn't in a major tourist area like London or Manchester your hotel is left to fall apart. The hotel I work at is full of asbestos in the closed off service elevator and the roof but nothing is done because we aren't given the extra budget to fix it. The building itself is old and crumbling away but again, nobody cares and we aren't being given the funds to deal with it despite being a hotel that's consistently fully booked

You meet so many people going in and out and get to understand different backgrounds, ethnicities and it helps you open your eyes to the nicer side of hospitality. If you have a great team, you will have no problem at all and would rather enjoy working. A lot of the time my manager joins in as much as he can and doesn’t see us employees as ‘below’ him. If something needed mopping up, he would do it himself if he knew i was busy etc. If I am not feeling too good, they’ll tell me to sit down and have a drink. I find having a good relationship with your manager and colleagues being very important as then you can rely on each-other if wanting shift swaps, a day off, or in need of anything else. It’s a very professional environment of which I work in however you can have a joke and a laugh with guests and colleagues.
Worst thing
Probably the fact we only get a 20 min break but it doesn’t bother me too much.

Best thing
Discount, pay & apprenticeship scheme
Worst thing
Lack of support for staff with disabilities, minimal training on night shift does not help with this. They leave you unsure what to do when you are on your own at night. Walk rounds each hour you are not seen on camera so could be dangerous. No paid break even though on night shift I physically cannot leave the premises or go to the staff room to take my break. Rotas are not done advanced enough so part time people sometimes don’t find out until the day before that they are working. In our contracts they say they can cut our hours at anytime, so do so and then expect you to pick up extra hours on other weeks when they need you but don’t take into account you need your regular hours.
