Oxfam Shop manager, February 2024

Best thing

Oxfam Deputy manager, December 2023
-
Best thing
Work with some absolutely lively volunteers, know that the hard work makes a huge difference to people living in poverty
Worst thing
The pay is well below minimum wage when you factor in the inability to take breaks and the early starts and late finishes just to do the minimum. No holiday cover so regularly not able to take holidays at a suitable time as taking holiday would require the shop to close and closing the shop reflects badly on the manager. If you have children or caring responsibilities, this is not the job for you. No flexibility.

Best thing
People, the volunteers and way that there is no average day, always new stock
Worst thing
Perifery stuff that does work right, being let down by volunteers, donations full of rubbish, not having enough hours in the day

Best thing
I have a lot of control over when and how I work. Pension, sick pay and other benefits are good
Worst thing
Pay is poor for the responsibilty I have. Lack of understanding and support from higher up. Difficult to cover shop for me to have time off for holiday or sickness
