Best thing
I work with incredible people and help some of the most vulnerable. I work really hard to connect 2 services and when it works it’s amazing!
Worst thing
Never being recognised for the hard work and good things that I do daily! Multiple times a day! Not getting the help to deal the the traumatic things that happen in a hospital setting! Being expected to carry on and deal with it because it’s part of my job. Not being able to talk to anyone else about it because it’s part of my job. Sitting with nurses and listening them have the same experience except they had hand on! I just took calls and listened. Nearly 15 years of listening and never being heard has taken its toll on my physical and mental health. Keeping up with mandatory training and being negatively reprimanded when we can barely keep up with our duty’s on a day to day basis! Never mind keeping track of ESR when we get a “SpareHour”!

Best thing
Caring for people and trying to give them the best experience. Doing your best to make patients feel safe and comfortable in an otherwise frightening situation and sharing their experiences with them, good or bad... helping them feel less alone and safe.
Worst thing
Over worked beyond measure. Staff to patient ratio is ALWAYS too low. Being unable to give every patient what they deserve because of the system.
Too much focus on paperwork/ bundles and repetitive documentation rather than just in one place.
Being bullied and management not doing anything about it.
Giving your life and soul to the profession but the situation of the workplace is so dire it causes you to sacrifice your whole self and eventually your family.NHS Wales Midwife, March 2021
