What are head chefs saying about pay at Mitchells & Butlers?

  • Best thing

The tips tbh. My colleagues are also really nice and we have quite a supportive team environment.

    Worst thing

We are definitely expected to do too much on the rate of pay we're given.
Restaurant environment can be particularly stressful.
It's difficult to plan ahead for things with the last minute rota.

  • Best thing

The customers and the team around you, generally a great bunch and customers are on the whole very understanding.

    Worst thing

Head office havent a clue what is actually going on in the business, it is far too top heavy with more consultants/advisors than one can shake a stick at. There is a total lack of understanding of the cost of living and the relationship with rates of pay, with the hours worked by their teams and the demands that these place on the teams. In addition the senior management have no understanding of the impact of their decision, how their unrealistic labour targets are impacting the delivery of the brand and fail to be operations led to coach staff/management on how to achieve the targets more effectively. The link between sales growth and labour costs/control is totally lost on the current Operations Director in the brand that I work in. The rates of pay are frankly insulting and demeaning and the Management by laptop culture of the senior team will prevent the brand achieving its end goals. The store based teams need more practical training on how to actually perform certain tasks, for example interviewing.

  • Best thing

making the food i’ve always loved cooking

    Worst thing

the staff my head chef is great but the shift leads don’t know basic food hygiene procedures or stock rotation and it was infuriating having to pick up all there slack for half the pay they also would just verbally abuse anyone under them i pack the job in two months into it because how bad it got
