Best thing
I work with my family and everyone is relatively young so you can have a laugh.
General Managers areWorst thing
It's physically strenuous, head office regularly and knowingly leave places short staffed, constantly put pressure on managers to cut hours from staff meaning hours can be massively inconsistent, the businesses have been years without investment which leads to abuse from customers and the area manager is a bully with no knowledge of the industry. They also use underhanded dodgy methods to push people from businesses if they want them gone.

Best thing
The team and friends you can make, also some conversations you have with customers makes you feel great when you help them out and they actually appreciate it, that's when they do.
Worst thing
Rude customers, a lot of them. Being under staffed. So much training to do which isn't designed for your job, it's designed for them all including chefs and mangers training yet you aren't one. Mangers and chefs can be rude due to it being such a stressful environment. There are many more.
Marston’s Bartender, February 2023
-
Best thing
Finishing time.
Worst thing
Faulty kitchen equipment that gets left for months to get fixed, Foh leaving food to go cold, overworked and under paid, pub ran by head office essentially and not in house, force dropped products, under trained staff Foh and boh. Pretty much a total shambles of a way to run a pub.

Managers who liked to wave their managers cards in your fa e and act above everyone else.
Newbies are not trained properly. Newbies are trained by newbies which declines the quality of service over a period of time.
No real training is given not even for new managers.
Managers that come to the pub for training who are taking on new pubs get better training than those who actually work in houseMarston’s Employee, October 2022

Best thing
Fun, get free things after events
Worst thing
Bar set up
Marston’s Bar staff, October 2022
-
Best thing
Some of the other staff are really nice
Worst thing
Managers don’t care about staff unless they’re getting their bonuses. Staff are spoken to like they are toddlers by management. Lack of promotions and lack of training. Rotas changed last minute. Sometimes even half an hour before your shift. No regard for the mental well-being of staff, especially if you are going through a lot. Head office have no idea what it is really like to work in the industry. Arrogant members of staff get rewarded and quiet staff just get ignored. Staff morale is always low, and is made worse by the presence of the manager.
