    Marston’s Waitress, May 2023

  • Best thing

    Living in paying no bills

    Worst thing

  • Best thing

No 2 shifts are the same.

    Worst thing

No set work days, can be called in at anytime with very little notice.

    6.8

    Marston’s Bartender, May 2023

  • Best thing

    Team work together

    Worst thing

    Management are awful
No respect for personal time or days off
Treated with a lack of respect and made to feel small when management are unhappy

    1.2

    Marston’s Team member, May 2023

  • Best thing

I work with my family and everyone is relatively young so you can have a laugh.
    General Managers are

    Worst thing

It's physically strenuous, head office regularly and knowingly leave places short staffed, constantly put pressure on managers to cut hours from staff meaning hours can be massively inconsistent, the businesses have been years without investment which leads to abuse from customers and the area manager is a bully with no knowledge of the industry. They also use underhanded dodgy methods to push people from businesses if they want them gone.

    1.2

    Marston’s Housekeeper, March 2023

  • Best thing

    The people

    Worst thing

The long hours and low pay

    2.8

    Marston’s Line chef, March 2023

  • Best thing

The team and friends you can make, also some conversations you have with customers makes you feel great when you help them out and they actually appreciate it, that's when they do.

    Worst thing

Rude customers, a lot of them. Being under staffed. So much training to do which isn't designed for your job, it's designed for them all including chefs and mangers training yet you aren't one. Mangers and chefs can be rude due to it being such a stressful environment. There are many more.

    1.2

    Marston’s Bartender, February 2023

  • Best thing

    Finishing time.

    Worst thing

Faulty kitchen equipment that gets left for months to get fixed, Foh leaving food to go cold, overworked and under paid, pub ran by head office essentially and not in house, force dropped products, under trained staff Foh and boh. Pretty much a total shambles of a way to run a pub.

    1.2

    Marston’s Line chef, January 2023

  • Best thing

    Easy to book holidays
I work with some of my best friends
GM and AM’s are good managers
Have a slightly more competitive pay than minimum wage

    Worst thing

Long, unpaid breaks as a way to save the wage percentage
Feel bad for calling in sick
Expected to always work with minimal staff as possible on shifts, can lead to feeling stressed if the demand outways the staffing
Work almost nearly every weekend, all weekend

    5.0

No breaks, treated like dirt on their shoe, feels like a prison,

    1.4

    Marston’s Bar staff, December 2022

  • Best thing

The team i work with is like a big family

    Worst thing

    The uncertainty

    8.6

    Marston’s Assistant manager, November 2022

  • Best thing

I am given freedom to be myself and do my job in a way that best suits me.

    Worst thing

The customers get away with too much

    7.3

    Marston’s Team member, November 2022

  • Best thing

The people I work with, the manager is good

    Worst thing

Bad rotas, area manager and higher don’t help at all, not enough hours for the team and not enough staff

    2.3

    Marston’s Supervisor, October 2022

  • Best thing

I love the job itself, hospitality and interacting with customers and creating a pleasant experience for them is what makes me happy

    Worst thing

Unhygienic illegal practices, underpaid, unlawful deductions from pay and unprofessionalism managers getting involved in personal life and holding it against me when I tried to leave

    2.0

    Marston’s Waitress, October 2022

  • Best thing

    Interaction with customers
    Feedback from customers
Tips depending on what kind of night youre having

    Worst thing

Managers who liked to wave their managers cards in your fa e and act above everyone else.
Newbies are not trained properly. Newbies are trained by newbies which declines the quality of service over a period of time.
No real training is given not even for new managers.
Managers that come to the pub for training who are taking on new pubs get better training than those who actually work in house

    5.5

    Marston’s Employee, October 2022

  • Best thing

Fun, get free things after events

    Worst thing

    Bar set up

    8.8

    Marston’s Bar staff, October 2022

  • Best thing

Some of the other staff are really nice

    Worst thing

Managers don’t care about staff unless they’re getting their bonuses. Staff are spoken to like they are toddlers by management. Lack of promotions and lack of training. Rotas changed last minute. Sometimes even half an hour before your shift. No regard for the mental well-being of staff, especially if you are going through a lot. Head office have no idea what it is really like to work in the industry. Arrogant members of staff get rewarded and quiet staff just get ignored. Staff morale is always low, and is made worse by the presence of the manager.

    1.2

    Marston’s Waitress, September 2022

  • Best thing

Most of the people I work with

    Worst thing

    Management playing favourites

    4.1

    Marston’s Waitress, September 2022

  • Best thing

The people you work with are some of the best people you'll ever meet

    Worst thing

The pay is horrendously low and there are little-to-no staff benefits. Head office people come across as out-of-touch with the pubs (all in the same storm but different boats kind of thing)

    4.7

    Marston’s Waitress, September 2022

  • Best thing

The customers for the most part, amazing shift manager, socialising

    Worst thing

Match days, heavy lifting, dealing with assholes
