    6.0

John Lewis & Partners Warehouse operative, September 2023

  • Best thing

Being out on the road, meeting new people, the team members you work with, the new products you get to install.

    Worst thing

Shift isn’t suitable for family life. Saturday shifts don’t give you enough of a break from a Friday night. Management cause much more issues than is necessary. Constantly worried about receiving investigations for things that you have no control over. If you’re sick or get injured you will be investigated. Constant disciplinary’s hanging over your head. No pay increases. No bonuses. No thanks from management when you go above and beyond, it’s just expected of you. Your ideas are never taken seriously, always fobbed off. Some managers like to scream and shout at you if they don’t like what you say to them. Equipment necessary to do the role is hard to get. Uniform is horrendous for the role. Favourites get what they want and get pushed for everything. Being told to go work on the bins if you don’t like the job. Forced overtime. Can’t get a rota that works well for everyone. Fighting for holidays every year. Managers like to guilt trip if you are off sick. Holidays to be taken for bereavement’s unless it’s immediate family members. Mental health isn’t taken seriously. Agency porters are not trained correctly and may not be able to do the job correctly but signed off anyway. Agency porters used instead of full time staff as they are “needed” off road to support managers, of which there could be 3 or 4 at a time, to complete management roles.

  • Best thing

Discount/partner dining is subsidised. Sick pay from day one being off

    Worst thing

Large workload, £10.50 per hour pay, being there for 4years so no enhanced pay for working Sundays or bank holidays. Had a 3pence pay rise in 2023!
Management are mouthy, some are no help, partners with 10 plus years service on enhanced pay do very little. They know how to work the system. High turnover of staff. They leave for better pay.

John Lewis & Partners Employee, April 2023

  • Best thing

My team is really nice, and we help each other out if something is wrong. Working in certain areas is nice. It's pretty central.

    Worst thing

Customers are horrible and treat you with contempt. Managers can be iffy with you, and are the root cause for people leaving. Very understaffed. Made to work for more than we get paid, with lots of responsibility. Stressful environment. Sick pay and how being sick works is an actual joke. Treated like a number. No progression. Cult mentality

    Worst thing

Monotonous work but thats exepected in a warehouse. Shifts only confirmed the day before on a day by day basis. Often very little work which results in being asked to leave early (optional) or shifts get cancelled. Targets. Managers leanient but can be a pain

    6.0

John Lewis & Partners Sales assistant, January 2023

  • Best thing

we are a highly interconnected and very friendly team who work as a real team to keep the store running smoothly. we all get on very well with each other an everyone is committed to providing a very high standard of customer care which ensures customer satisfaction, allows us to build rapport with to keep customers coming back to the store, increasing our brand loyalty and making customers happy every day. we use seemlessly integrated headset technology to work as a team and communicate any issue or to solve problems, prevent theft or even to have a bit of a giggle and have fun conversations with each other which help us get through the day, boosts morale and keeps everyone on their toes but continuing to provide a very high standard of customer care whilst keeping our fellow colleagues and partners happy in our jobs we perform. there are many benefits to working as a partnership including heavily discounted/subsidised food and drinks in the partner dining room, free meals during the months of October to January, the chance to purchase many items that might be unsuitable to remain on the shop floor but items that maybe slightly damaged or not suited to be sold in the branch, these items are sold to partners with a 75% discount. because we are partners in the company, which means we are owners of the company, and during the financial year, if we are on target to make a profit, that profit is shared amongst all partners in the form of a bonus which can be quite substantial. This year, given the cost of living crisis currently happening countrywide, our head office have agreed to give every single partner, regardless of their role within the company, a tax free lump sum of up to £500. we also recieve discounts on many leisure activities, events, theatre or cinema tickets, discounted mobile phone deals, trips to experience various days out that can be used on our days off. we are also very well looked after and supported by a health and wellbeing team who provide resources for many personal issues we may be experiencing which feeds into keeping partners happy, valued, protected and respected by the company and collaboratively with other partners. we also get a yearly pay rise which is linked to our individual performances. They offer flexible working hours for part time staff and can make reasonable, flexible adjustments to part and full time staff. we also have yearly follow ups with our manager to discuss where we could possibly develop further with our roles by learning new skills. there are other benefits to working for the company that become available during your time as a partner and there is the choice to have a voice to be listened to whether it is an idea, big or small, that will help to improve our daily work lives and job satisfaction. It's great being a partner and I always feel welcomed by every one in the whole branch. We have a wide diversity of staff from all different backgrounds and walks of life and this helps us all to feel inclusive in anything that happens in the company and makes us as individuals feel valued and instills pride in what l we do. I love working here, and despite only being a supermarket assistant, I would consider John Lewis and partners to be the best employer I have ever had in my entire working career.

    Worst thing

The worst thing about our job is knowing that the branch makes heavy losses due to theft, which is unfortunately a very real crime that happens during our daily work lives that we are mostly unable to prevent from happening, but when we do spot potential crimes from happening in the store, we can work collaboratively to determine any wrong doing by a small percentage of dishonest customers. we feel as if we have ti protect our store from suffering these losses as they affect our potential to be awarded bonuses and other benefits, so we naturally feel really protective of everything that goes on in the store on a day to day basis.

  • Best thing

Long breaks , staff discount and the people you work with

    Worst thing

The managers /The company as a whole Just doesn’t care about you and only money . You’re often overworked and under payed and under supported . They expect you do everything on very little staff as well so it’s a very stressful environment and you’re not getting enough good things out of it, so very damaging to your mental and physical well-being .

John Lewis & Partners Employee, October 2022

  • Best thing

The people I work with, the hourly pay now it's being increased to sit close to the living wage. The benefits we get.

    Worst thing

The high turnover of team managers, that new partners don't stay. Sometimes very under staffed and it puts alot pressure on you to cover more areas at the same time. No progression unless you're a favourite. Developing is non existent. Job is repetitive and they expect alot from you at times leading to stress.
