Firefighters have the job of responding to and protecting people and places against fires.

Other names for firefighters are:

  • Firemen
  • Fire officers

There are two types of firefighters:

  • Wholetime - these are full-time firefighters who usually work in cities and urban areas.
  • Retained - these are on-call firefighters who usually work in rural areas. They often have an additional job outside of firefighting.

This job might involve:

  • Responding to emergency calls
  • Rescuing people from fires, floods, chemical leaks and other physical dangers
  • Putting out fires
  • Checking buildings and sites and to make sure they’re fire-safe
  • Regular drills and training

You may have to work early mornings, late nights, on weekends and bank holidays.

This is a physically demanding job.

You can apply directly to this job, but you’ll need to pass assessments to get hired.
