Dunelm
Dunelm is a retailer. They sell furniture and homeware.

The customers
Dunelm Employee, May 2022
Staff discount, some nice products and some very helpful and friendly colleagues
No sick pay - you only get Statutory Sick Pay from government, Dunelm does not pay a penny when their staff are sick.
Christmas Day and Easter Sunday are taken out of your holiday entitlement or you are forced to pay it back (no other company does this)
Dunelm Employee, March 2022
The store colleagues and relationships I have formed through working with them and duty managers are extremely friendly and attentive.
Store manager shows no regards to staff wellbeing and has proven to disregard staffs personal issues and bypass them as “inconvenient”.
You are expected to do numerous jobs throughout the store whether that is within your field of work or not and must prove to have the flexibility to juggle other tasks throughout this.
Despite having a 28 day return policy, customers are still granted returns with managements approval, further to the customer services teams allowing customers to be granted returns or exchanges without proof of purchase, going against store policies.
If there are no hardy staff available, you are urged to dismantle and handle large rugs of which are more than your own body weight.
When applying for the job, It was heavily expressed to me that I would never have to endure harassment from upset customers, however this is very much apart of my working routine.

The friends you make at work
Dunelm Employee, February 2022
discount, managers are friendly, get on well with colleagues, can try a bit of everything before you settle down to something you enjoy, 10 minute grace period either way for your start time
having to stand your entire shift and get sore feet and legs with the risk of getting varicose veins, only having a half hour break for all hours worked greater than 4 hours, customers act entitled and don't follow return or exchange policies, pay isn't great for under 21s and the probation period is 6 months, you have to pack customers bags and they get annoyed at you if you take too long, online purchases being refunded in store are a pain, customers not following the 28 day returns on the receipts, people bringing back items they broke themselves and trying to get exchanges or refunds when it's entirely their fault
Dunelm Employee, February 2022
Unpaid sick leave, when they see you're hardworking you will work even more, unpaid maternity, inequality (some ppl get away with constant lateness, some ppl can't be late even once), head office doesn't know what's going on in stores, doesn't send security when it's needed (some stores operate without any security, so staff has to deal with thieves)
Dunelm Employee, February 2022
I like the interaction with customers and helping them. I like the team on the shop floor. I like the variety of roles.
The store manager, no proper training programme at all, rota changed without being asked, not enough staff to cover everything as store manager has driven staff to leave, chaotic rota's, not appreciated by manager, no support, sickness..3 strikes and you get a warning!
Dunelm Employee, January 2022
Satisfying teamwork
Chaotic, broken equipment and systems, bad management
Dunelm Employee, January 2022
You may make a few good friends on the way
Stress, mental breakdowns due to lack of staff and care and respect. Expected to do the work of 3 employees if you’ve been there long term since the turnover of staff is incredibly high and new starters through no fault of their own aren’t as efficient. Extremely difficult to book holiday as no more than 3/4 people can be on holiday at one time of a staff of over 50 people. Limited care for working conditions, they only become safe for work when an inspection is due, told we’re not allowed to change or swap shifts for a like for like employee. Calling people outside of working hours repeatedly. Numerous questions and lack of empathy when you are ill/have an appointment. Had to go to head office to sort out pay more than once after being underpaid and management not doing anything about it.
