Worst thing
The management is awful, they micromanage a lot by doing a lot observations. Everything gets blamed on team members if the store does bad. If no customers come in and we don’t hit the target we get blamed. We still have to hit our target even when we are in the stock room all day

Best thing
- Lovely coworkers
- Good staff perks - 33% off of shoes, 4 free pairs a year
- Sometimes you serve lovely and understanding customers and really sweet children
- Reasonably good payWorst thing
- Unpaid breaks.
- Unrealistic targets - we are expected to push products onto customers to reach certain targets and get reprimanded if we don’t reach them. The targets were increased last year despite the fact that the old targets were rarely being met. It doesn’t seem like head office understands that it really depends on luck with the customers you serve that day and if they actually need and are willing to spend money on the overpriced products you try to sell them.
- Quality of shoes decreasing despite high prices - a lot of pairs are returned with soles wearing away or glue breaking down after only being worn a few times.
- Not great range of shoes for certain demographics - wide and narrow fittings don’t have many options. For kids, casual shoes are only really made up to a size 12 - above that it’s only school shoes and trainers despite a lot of customers looking for everyday shoes in larger sizes. Large size 8-10 for school shoes only really have velcro options.
- Customers can be rude and demanding
- Insoles used to be free if fitted with on kids, now we charge 50% for them which isn’t too expensive but is likely to be met with negative reactions from customers used to getting them for free. Apparently this is due to too many people taking them ‘just in case’ but given how cheap (and low quality, the foam insoles wear down very quickly) they are, it seems unnecessary.
- Management at my store can come across as patronising and insensitive at times.
- Work can be very stressful and physically demanding when busy but very boring when it’s quietClarks Sales assistant, December 2023

Worst thing
Managers are very entitled and not up to date with how to treat their staff. Rotas are only in the break room and they sometimes change your next shift when you are away and unable to see it. Experienced workers are often rude and condescending to new staff.

Best thing
working for a franchise store > company owned.
No targets, small team, decent pay for my age, my colleagues are amazing!Worst thing
Clarks as a company are awful, this list doesn’t even cover half of it. (These points are NOT related to the franchise, I have worked in both a busy and a quiet shop for context)
- back to school, was set for 8 mins per child in the bigger store. SO unrealistic considering the stock room was huge and over 2 floors. Parents as well as children are difficult to deal with in a good day let alone in the summer
- most part time staff members are expected to double their hours during the summer, and no one is allowed any time off during the last 2 weeks of august
- the targets the company set are unachievable because they are so unrealistic. They did not take into account covid when setting new targets. Which stressed management out, furthermore they projected the stress onto sales assistants
- do not get paid for training. The larger store during lockdown forced us all on to training zoom calls (looked great for management) but was such a waste of time
- Clarks head office is so out of touch with what the footfall is really like. The selling technique training they give is useless because you can’t actually apply it when selling - they basically want you to shove products down customers throats, and are shocked when it doesn’t work.
- The products are awful. The standards have depleted so much. Shoes are thin and feel like plastic. I’m unpacking shoes now where glue is on the shoe, the stitching is wonky and uneven. Does not align with the extortionate price tag. It’s embarrassing to sell.
- Clarks are using smaller stores like open warehouses. All of the stock gets taken out by online orders we have to fill and send out and does not get replaced. All the new stock (which might actually have a chance at selling if it wasn’t so overpriced), gets sent to all the large flagship stores in the cities.
- The company have no target consumer, as they try to make everyone happy, it just doesn’t work.
They don’t provide for all children, you reach a junior 3 and the number of options halves. There’s no casual styles for them at all, I usually send them to a sports shop at that stage.
They bring the same style of shoes back for the ‘elderly’ every year, they really have only 3 suitable pairs to choose from, there is no colour options (if someone from head office is reading this, bring back shoes in navy, they are sick of black and brown)
and for everyone in between the shoes are not fashionable - please stop trying to be. Clarks isn’t known for that and never will be. The company needs to focus on and invest the money into what the consumer really buys, and not try to change their consumer.Clarks Employee, March 2022

Best thing
The best thing was the staff I worked with and my manager, she was the best
Worst thing
The fact my store was made redundant because of a reason that was never given to us, the fact that other stores still might face the fate ours did, the fact they based the income of sales against the previous years despite the fact we were closed for most of 2020 and therefore could not have physically made any money compared to 2019, the amount of "learn its" we had to do but even if we did complete them all it was hardly ever rewarded or recognised by higher ups, just my manager and the only praise I ever received was from a customer, not the company. The styles also do not reflect modern day fashion and do not sell well because of that, most of the selection caters to the elderly and children, not really the ages in-between and stock was hardly ever shared out properly, so main styles rarely ever came in during back to school periods, when we needed them the most.
