What people are saying about pay at Clarks

  • Best thing

    The pay is ok

    Worst thing

The management is awful, they micromanage a lot by doing a lot observations. Everything gets blamed on team members if the store does bad. If no customers come in and we don’t hit the target we get blamed. We still have to hit our target even when we are in the stock room all day

    Clarks Employee, March 2024

  • Best thing

    - Lovely coworkers
    - Good staff perks - 33% off of shoes, 4 free pairs a year
    - Sometimes you serve lovely and understanding customers and really sweet children
    - Reasonably good pay

    Worst thing

    - Unpaid breaks.
    - Unrealistic targets - we are expected to push products onto customers to reach certain targets and get reprimanded if we don’t reach them. The targets were increased last year despite the fact that the old targets were rarely being met. It doesn’t seem like head office understands that it really depends on luck with the customers you serve that day and if they actually need and are willing to spend money on the overpriced products you try to sell them.
    - Quality of shoes decreasing despite high prices - a lot of pairs are returned with soles wearing away or glue breaking down after only being worn a few times.
    - Not great range of shoes for certain demographics - wide and narrow fittings don’t have many options. For kids, casual shoes are only really made up to a size 12 - above that it’s only school shoes and trainers despite a lot of customers looking for everyday shoes in larger sizes. Large size 8-10 for school shoes only really have velcro options.
    - Customers can be rude and demanding
    - Insoles used to be free if fitted with on kids, now we charge 50% for them which isn’t too expensive but is likely to be met with negative reactions from customers used to getting them for free. Apparently this is due to too many people taking them ‘just in case’ but given how cheap (and low quality, the foam insoles wear down very quickly) they are, it seems unnecessary.
    - Management at my store can come across as patronising and insensitive at times.
    - Work can be very stressful and physically demanding when busy but very boring when it’s quiet

  • Best thing

Good pay, good training, mostly easy work, easy to understand

    Worst thing

Intimidating & unrealistic targets, uncooperative customers, sometimes very hard to book holidays

  • Best thing

Discount (33% off all clarks shoes), really nice team, pay good for my age (under 18)

    Worst thing

Can't take holiday during 'peak weeks', job is physically exhausting, difficult targets to hit (particularly if on kids), breaks are short and unpaid, customers can be extremely difficult
