What are retail store and shop managers saying about pay at Claire’s?

  • Best thing

The team - I have nothing bad to say about anyone who I work with, all so lovely and made me feel welcome when I first started!!
My manager - So much better than my manager at my previous job, helps me progress, cares about my mental health/additional needs, gave me enough training especially in ear piercing
    50% off
    Piercings
    Working with children
Pay is good - minimum wage but I still get well paid

    Worst thing

The customers - majority of them are extremely rude to me and my colleagues!!
Sometimes I'll get critiqued on things I'm doing well at, however it doesn't really bother me.
Doing deliveries - sometimes we will get too many things that we already have and are expected to put them all out even though there's no space
Sometimes I'll be expected to cover shifts last minute, which isn't always ideal especially when I'm in school/studying for A levels

Management on a revolving door; store manager left in January after she worked like a dog for the company for best part of a decade and was denied time off to visit her family abroad. Her replacement left before she even finished her 2 weeks training, didnt even make it into store- smart woman.
a new manager still wasn't hired until mid april.
I worked at this store for 8 months and there was 5 different district managers in this time. I had been basically doing the assistant managers job for months on supervisors wage in the hopes that it would earn me the promotion and the pay rise that comes with it and had been told by the district manager at the time that when the new store manager started I could interview for it but then when that DM left and the new one started I was told that I never should've been told that as the position doesn't exist. I don't know whether it was a case of the old DM was misinformed because she was new or if she'd found out that I'd mentioned to other team members that for financial reasons I'd probably need to find a new job if I didn't get the promotion so she strung me along to keep me at the store while management was so uncertain. head office effectively abandon stores; the old manager that left in january was a dual site manager and head office didn't even advertise the managers position for the other store until mid March. the 2 girls that worked there (one of which could only do 20 hours for visa reasons) were lone trading almost every day because head office were not hiring for their store at all.
head office do not care about what's happening in a store unless sales and KPI's are low; total abandonment of the team, that at the time consisted of myself and 2 new girls. We needed a lot of support and got almost nothing
When talking to a manager from another store about the minimum wage increase, i was told that "head office are gonna be fuming" when they learn they'll have to start paying us more. Multi million pound international company and they'd be fuming about paying people £1 more?
Do not work here if you are chronically ill whether it's mental health or physical health because even if you inform the company of your illness in your interview AND on your health questionnaire AND provide doctors notes they will treat you like an inconvenience.
Supervisors were only given 4 and 8 hour contracts so if you don't get enough hours to pay your bills it's not their problem if you're getting your contracted hours.
They offer the absolute bare minimum training for ear piercing; they talk you through the process, you pierce 5 peoples ears and you're done. no wonder the company has such a bad reputation for it.
There would be days where team members would be doing 10 piercings back to back, and would be penalised for turning people away regardless of their reasons for it.
Offered piercings from the age of 4 and a half MONTHS and when I say piercing a baby's ears is the hardest thing I have ever done I am not joking. The fact that the they even offer this for that age is a testament to how the company clearly only care about money and not the welfare of their customers; baby piercings were so difficult to do that they very rarely went in straight due to the fact that babies do not stay still no matter how tight a grip the parent is holding them in. The simple fact that the parent has to essentially pin their baby down on their lap to do the piercing should be evidence of why the company should not be offering piercings from such a young age.

8p difference in pay from sales assistant who just works tills to Keyholder/supervisor who lone trades, fills out all the paperwork including profits / losses, collects change from bank, main piercer on every shift, and much more.
