Best thing

Worst thing

Worst thing

Barnardo’s Manager, December 2023

Best thing
It's great going through the bags of donations and sorting through can be very rewarding. It is a diverse job and as long as your colleagues are good it's great.
Worst thing
Management have overwhelming expectations for productivity. You dint get paid to be in store early to set up and to clock off. It's difficult to get your full hour for lunch which you are not paid for. The role is quite demanding for the pay, you are expected to do alot and it's not worth it. A store associate is expected to be able to do everything the manager is and will be expected to cover the manager when required. For no extra pay. Even managers pay is not great. Would not recommend as a career

Best thing
The customers
Worst thing
Area management, gossip, lack of work life balance, not being able to take breaks or toilet breaks when working alone, no appreciation, no encouragement for new ideas, annual leave requests ignored but managers can book what they like

Best thing
Meetin customers and I work with a great team
Worst thing
Higher management
Barnardo’s Assistant manager, February 2022
-
Best thing
Customers, some coworkers and volunteers
Worst thing
Have to be on till all day due to having hours cut. Too reliant on volunteers who can simply choose not to turn up - which is fine, but without the paid staff hours nothing can get done in store. Despite this you are still expected to hit unrealistic budgets. Management keeps staff in the dark about important decisions and area managers have obvious favourites who will be informed of things before others are.

Best thing

Worst thing
Skeleton staff, expected to recruit volunteers to make up hours, expected to work more than contracted hours with no pay, huge workload and unrealistic targets leading to not being able to take breaks
