Best thing
Having a decent support network with my department of people who understand your issues or questions you may have.
Worst thing
The fact that we get blamed fir issues customers face when we've gone out of our way to order or design exactly what they wanted. Secondly, customer services or escalations nearly always seem to cause more problems then solve.

1hr lunch unpaidWorst thing

B&Q Customer advisor, December 2022
-
Best thing
Reasonable pay
Worst thing
Often no overtime available (so not helpful during breaks from uni); managers expect you to be very flexible with working shifts and push for you to work every weekend when you’re not entirely flexible during the week. Management mostly help their own departments and let others in store struggle. Very difficult to get any increase in contracted hours (unless you agree to work all weekend, every weekend)
B&Q Customer advisor, November 2022

Worst thing

B&Q Employee, November 2022

B&Q Customer assistant, November 2022
-
Best thing
Better than stacking shelves. Rewarding when a project comes together. I have made lifelong friends working here.
Worst thing
No commisson. Sales based pressure. Improper training. Poor managment from head office. Unusable systems. Adding more work without more pay. Poor support from head office. Managers frequently gaslight any problems or concerns. Stressful. Unfair absence policy. Little to no recognition for exceptional performance.

-
Best thing
Colleagues make the best of the work
Worst thing
Corporate managers at the top don't know how hard the job is and pile more work onto us. Heavily underpaid. Management don't ask workforce for opinion on change before making change

-
Best thing
The people that we work with is like a family we all respect each
Worst thing
The hours and shifts are not family friendly
B&Q Employee, August 2022

Best thing
Best parts are staff discount and decent co-workers (but this of course is situational)
Pay for the area is quite good, especially for students/young people.
Christmas bonus; usually given in form of supermarket vouchers.Worst thing
Male managers who patronise female staff, witnessed second hand.
Managers in general who do not care about you. I’ve been told to reconsider my position after feeling negatively about being torn down by customers.
Sick leave process is ridiculous and stressful. It’s instance based which means hypothetically you could miss three separate shifts due to three separate sicknesses and be punished; or you could miss six shifts but be completely fine because you haven’t returned to work since reporting your illness. Hopefully that made sense.
Claim to care so much about mental health but cannot handle when people show symptoms of mental illness (work induced) i.e depression, anxiety and stress.
Perpetually understaffed, you need to call certain departments over and over before getting a response.
Recently, overtime has been cut for all staff so if overtime is something you’d be looking for; you will not find it. As of April 2022.B&Q Customer advisor, August 2022

B&Q Customer advisor, June 2022
-
Best thing
Decent breaks if you’re on an 8 hour shift, shop floor staff all work together.
Worst thing
The store and deputy managers are tied at the hip, they are the worst thing about the store and why I want to leave.
B&Q Customer assistant, June 2022
-
Best thing
The consistency in work hours once you're contracted you will always get the hours you're contracted to.
Worst thing
Customers are horrible sometimes, staying late after store close on a Sunday at 4pm stay til 9pm to clean and face up aisles. Absences are based on a Red Amber Green scale if you have 3 or more Absences in a 12 month period they do a review with you to see if you're still suitable to work there (regardless how long you've been working there) only way of getting around it is covid excuses or having a doctors note. B&Q opens early and closes late for the market it is in so it feels weird sometimes starting at 7am or finishing at 8pm. Cleaning up after customers on a Sunday is a nightmare always, the stores going to get trashed the next day and they have a night crew to work weekdays so don't understand why we really need to do cleaning on a Sunday too.
B&Q Customer advisor, April 2022

Best thing
The job is very easy to do and as a student the money is good
Worst thing
The management can be distant with the team and often play favourites, you have to book all your time off in one go
